ADI Part 2 Test

The eyesight test

At the start of the part two drive you will be asked to to read a number plate from a distance of:

  • 26.5 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate
  • 27.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate

You must use glasses or contact lenses during the whole test if you need them to read the number plate.

You will fail the test if you don’t pass the eyesight test and will count as one of the 3 attempts you’re allowed at the ADI part 2 test.

Show me tell me questions

You will be asked 5 vehicle safety questions which are also known as ‘show me, tell me’ questions.

The examiner will ask you:

  • 3 ‘show me’ questions where you’ll have to show them how you’d carry out the vehicle checks
  • 2 ‘tell me’ questions where you’ll have to explain how you’d carry out the vehicle checks

If you answer all five questions incorrectly this is considered a serious fault and would result in you failing the whole test.

Driving ability

You will need to demonstrate

  • expert handling of all controls
  • correct road procedure
  • anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action
  • sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
  • consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
  • demonstrate a good understanding of eco safe driving.
  • You will be expected to complete a ten minute independent drive where you are asked to follow road signs, or a series of directions before you move off or a combination of the too with no directions from the examiner.

Manoeuvres

You must be able to carry out all of the following manoeuvres:

  • Turn the car around in the road to face the opposite direction using the forward and reverse gears.
  • Reversing around a left and or right hand corner.
  • Reverse in to a bay.
  • Parallel park.

The training and preparation for this part of the qualification process is all carried out in-car, on a one to one basis.

The ‘average’ number of hours differs from person to person, but 10-12 hours with a trainer is normally sufficient.

We will advise you on how to improve your standard of driving to a high level which will enable you to pass the part two test,

We advise that you consolidate your learning by practicing what you have been shown whenever you are driving independently.
